Lady Wolves soccer starts season with two-win streak

Enter the 2016 Green River High School girls' soccer team; they're fresh, they're new and improving from the start.

This budding team earned two wins out of their first three games this season.

Their first game of the season, against Star Valley, gave the Lady Wolves a rough start. Star Valley took the game 2-0. Despite that early loss, Green River got back on top during their second game April 5 against Evanston.

The game went into overtime, with Green River winning 3-1. The Lady Wolves also won their recent game against Riverton April 8, with two unanswered goals. Next, the team will travel to Worland for tournament action Friday and Saturday.

"I felt we dominated the game," head coach Tracy Wyant said. "We had the ball on their half of the field the majority of the game."

Wyant said the team has worked on their defense, which helped them in their game against Riverton. She said the team possessed the ball well during that match. The team's communication on the field has improved from their first game to the most recent game as well. The lady wolves have made good improvements within their first few games, but they have much more to accomplish.

"There is always room for improvement," she said.

The team needs to improve in a few areas before the upcoming tournament this week. Wyant said the girls will practice this week to improve communication, combo play and the team's endurance. The team will need high endurance for the tournament, because they will be playing multiple games within a few days. The team also needs to improve on finishing plays. The team would've made more goals in their most recent game if they'd finished on more of their plays.

"We struggled with finishing," Wyant said. "We made 17 shots on their goal and only got two of them in there."

Compared to Green River's 17 shots, Riverton made a mere five shots on Green River's goal the entire game, and finished none.

"We took lots of shots, were in front of their net a lot, we just needed to finish those shots," she said. "We're going to see if we can improve on that and put that into play in the tournament."

The team this year is overcoming adversity in their early season, learning and improving as they go.

The team is young and many players are new to the team.

Some of the returning players started the season off the field with injuries.

Wyant is positive in her girls and confident in their skills to come. What they need, is practice.

The road ahead for the lady wolves is open with possibility.
