GRHS defeats Evanston at home

Both Green River High School varsity soccer teams walked away from Wolves stadium with wins Tuesday afternoon after tough encounters with the Evanston Red Devils.

For the boys team, the victory is the first of the season after battling Cheyenne Central to a tie during the first game of the season Saturday. For the girls, it's a chance to soothe the sting resulting from a 2-0 loss to Star Valley.

Head coach Chris Bieber said the team played well together during their second outing of the season. The 2-0 shutout by Green River started from a goal in the 35th minute from Jared Thornburg, but the game was sealed when the Red Devils scored an own goal after an out-of-bounds ball was thrown back into play.

In the girls game, the Red Devils would be the first to score. A goal from the Lady Wolves kept them in the game and resulted in overtime play between the two teams. The Lady Wolves would score a second goal during the first overtime period and were able to keep Evanston away from the net to close the game at 2-1. For head coach Tracy Wyant, the victory gives her hope the team will steadily improve throughout the season.

Wyant said the team played stronger during the second half and said the team's defense performed well, but continue working to improve some weak spots.

"We're still working out the bugs," Wyant said.

Wyant said the team needs to switch up their point of attack more after watching the girls overload one side of the field throughout the game, but said the longer the game went on, the better they played.

Both teams will compete against Riverton Friday in Green River.

Wyant said she expects Riverton to play a very physical game with the Lady Wolves and said the team will have to limit touching opportunities for Riverton.
