No rest for the GRHS wrestling team

Wolves compete in off-season tournaments

Green River High School wrestlers are honing their skills in the off season.

Nine Wolves who will participate in the upcoming 2016-2017 wrestling season traveled to Denver, competing in the Rocky Mountain Nationals tournament March 19-20.

Wrestlers from Green River competing in the tournament were Justin Flores, Nathan McCann, Devon VanValkenburg, Ira Dickinson, Payton Tucker, Jordan Tucker, Cameron Kessner, Trevor Scicluna, and GRHS assistant wrestling coach Mikel Hoopes.

"All wrestlers competed well," wrestling coach Marshall Rhodes said.

The tournament had brackets ranging from a 6-year-old division to an over-18 division. Tucker finished in sixth place in his bracket, while Flores wrestled seven matches and worked his way up to fourth place in the bracket. Hoopes finished in second place in his division.

Rhodes said the continual practice outside of the wrestling season is necessary for improvement. The out-of-season tournaments they continue to compete in are also a great chance to improve their technique and learn how to better compete in matches, he said.

This recent tournament will not be the wrestlers' only off-season practice they will get either. In a couple weeks, some Green River wrestlers will compete in an upcoming tournament in Nevada. After Nevada, a team from GRHS will compete in some duals in Colorado in June. The GRHS wrestlers also plan to attend a team camp in Laramie later this summer as well.

"The off season is a valuable time and can greatly benefit our program if wrestlers will commit to getting better," Rhodes said. "I look forward to a spring of improvement."
