Races change for house, senate districts

Democrat and Sweetwater County resident Michelle Irwin is no longer seeking the Senate District 14 seat she announced she would run for last November.

She’s taking another shot at the House District 18 seat she initially lost during the 2014 election. Rep. Fred Baldwin, R-Kemmerer, who defeated Irwin, announced he would run for Cooper’s senate seat.

Irwin’s decision comes after Sen. Stan Cooper, R-Kemmerer, announced he would not run for re-election. Cooper has served in the Wyoming Senate since 2005 and was elected to the state house in 2003.

“This represents a change of plans, and reflects an opportunity that didn’t exist when I made my earlier decision to run for Senate District 14 last November,” Irwin said in a email to the Star. “That decision was based on the information that was available at the time.”

Both districts encompass land from four Wyoming counties, including the western portion of Sweetwater County.

Baldwin said he wishes to continue his legislative service to serve the people of Wyoming during the economic downturn.

“Difficult decisions will need to be made by Wyoming leaders and Fred has an ongoing interest in keeping Wyoming prosperous and stable and in maintaining our freedoms and our lifestyles in land that we know and love,” Baldwin’s announcement states.

“Should we both win our respective elections, I look forward to working with (Baldwin) in the state legislature on behalf of our region and Wyoming,” Irwin said. “We need cooperation in both chambers, and from both parties, working on behalf of Wyoming and her citizens.”
