Girls state play ended by Tigers

The Lady Wolves earned their ticket to the state basketball tournament last week, but two losses would send them back home.

The Green River High School Girls Varsity Basketball team played their first match against the first seed for the 4A East, the Gillette Lady Camels, last Thursday. It was a game they would lose by a 40-point deficit with a final score of 65-25. The Lady Camels would ultimately take the state title this year, while Natrona County, the first seeded team in the 4A West, would be the only team from the west to break into the playoffs, eventually falling to the Lady Camels in the championship game.

The Lady Wolves' second match-up, taking place Friday, pit them against their Sweetwater County rivals, the Rock Springs Lady Tigers. Rock Springs lost their game to Cheyenne East the day before. The two teams had battled each other twice throughout the season, with the Lady Tigers earning wins in both those games. Their third match would end as the other two, with the Lady Tigers victorious a third time, winning by 9 points at the final score of 54-45.

While the Lady Wolves have struggled throughout the season, they end the season with some success as well. The team's overall record of five wins out of 26 games includes two victories over Kelly Walsh, a team that was able to defeat the Lady Wolves in their first matchup.

The Lady Wolves also won against Riverton twice this season and earned a win over Laramie. Another success for the Lady Wolves came from Chelsea Maes winning the 3-point shooting contest during the Flaming Gorge Classic in December.
