In the last tournament of the regular season, the Green River Speech and Debate Team wanted to make a statement and did so with a big first-place finish.
The team traveled to Worland this past weekend; and with 102 points they claimed first place. Natrona County took second with 37 points and Kelly Walsh came in third with 32 points.
“They performed very well with an overwhelming win; they knocked it out of the park,” head coach Carina White said.
This win was something the team really needed right before state, which takes place this weekend in Buffalo.
“The team is feeling prepared and ready to tackle state; this win helped bolster their confidence,” White said.
Even though the team dominated this tournament, they will have a tough road ahead if they want another state championship title.
“There is always room for improvement, coaches are co-coaching events so the kids get another perspective,” White said. “We are working with them at the same time with two coaches.”
White said the team is starting to get anxious for the state tournament, but a few students continued to impress White.
Abigaile Grubb won informative again, Elaine Comer won programmed oral interpretation and Dallin Hoyt won humor. The team also had finalists in almost every category.
White and the other coaching staff continues to encourage the team members and offer them advice.
“Stay strong, compete with heart, know your opponent and believe in yourself,” White said. “Don’t leave anything in that room; give it all you have every round and have no regrets.”
