Notes from Town Square: Hosting field trips for area students

It is that time of year when the long parade of cold and dreary days is almost over and we begin to think about sunny tomorrows.

Teachers from schools around Sweetwater County start calling the Green River Recreation Center to set up field trips, so their students can participate in activities here, at their local health and athletics facility. Students in the community of Green River are eager to take advantage of the amenities that we have to offer. Smaller communities across southwest Wyoming also set up field trips to visit the Green River Recreation Center.

Starting Monday and continuing through Thursday and March 14, the Lincoln Middle School Health and Physical Education (LMS HPE) classes will be visiting the recreation center to support LMS Proficiency Assessments for Wyoming Students (PAWS) testing efforts.

Students just finished up a health segment designed to educate young people about finding resources for their personal health and lifetime fitness. By engaging in a number of activities at the recreation center, LMS HPE teachers hope students will connect with the opportunities and resources the facility can offer to them.

Also, taking an “Active Break” between the student’s demanding testing schedule is a great way to support the recent studies of physical activity providing better blood flow to the brain, resulting in improved brain function. LMS HPE teachers wanted to familiarize the students with a local fitness facility that they could utilize on their own time with their own families and within their own community.

The students will start out their time at the recreation center with an introduction to the rules and etiquette of the facility; primarily respecting the other patrons and the city’s property. Next, they will perform a scavenger hunt for information about the recreation center.

The students will need to complete this before they participate in any activities.

Finally, the students are let loose to play racquetball, or swimming and roller-skating, or jump in a game of basketball, dodgeball or wallyball (a fast-paced version of volleyball on a racquetball court). The main motivation for them is to stay active and moving and to have fun while being respectful of their surroundings.  But being active is important for everyone, young or old.

Each year we get many requests for field trips at the end of their school year. It is important for the recreation center to take advantage of these opportunities to welcome others into the facility and to experience the positive nature of properly taking care of your body and mind.

It has always been nice to see these school field trips and we look forward to serving our community now and into the future.
