Wolves lose close game to Natrona

The Wolves fought neck and neck against Natrona High School on Friday.

“The game with Natrona was close from start to finish,” head Coach Laurie Ivie said. “We played the best game of our season.”

The Green River High School boys varsity basketball team fought a tough, back-and-forth fight against Natrona throughout the game. There were nine lead changes between the two teams during that Friday-night game. With six minutes left on the clock, the game was tied.

It wasn’t until toward the end when Natrona took the final lead, and the game ended in favor of Natrona, 59-53.

“We played great team basketball against Natrona,” Ivie said. “The boys reacted to what the defense gave them, and did not get rattled at all by their full-court press or zone defense.”

The team worked closely together to make their major points and advantages during the game, and many of the players made great strides.

“Jake Angelovich played big minutes for us in the first half,” Ivie said.

Jake Angelovich made 4 points, 2 boards, an assist and a block. Devin Love scored 14 points, and made 7 rebounds, and 2 assists during the game. Cameron Morris scored 13 points, 3 boards, and 3 assists. Chase Stoeger made 8 points, Trevor Zumwalt, scored 5, and Hunter Spartz made 2 points and 2 blocks. Gavin Heiser ended the game with 7 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals.

“Gavin Heiser provided the defensive spark and made several huge hustle plays,” Ivie said.

Even though the game ended in a loss for Green River, the players feel it was a win for the team.

“It was a win for us even though the scoreboard didn’t say so,” she said.

Green River lost two other games last week. One loss was against Star Valley, with a score of 74-30, and the other against Kelly Walsh, the score 61-26.

At the game against Rock Springs, Evan Carollo was honored with the Sportsmanship Award for his display of sportsmanship during the season.

“Evan is very deserving of the sportsmanship award,” Ivie said. “He does everything in his power to motivate teammates, helping others, and keeping everyone upbeat and positive. He is a great leader for our younger players.”

Green River is looking toward the regional tournament in Casper this weekend. There, the Wolves will face off against Evanston on Thursday.
