In a dominate fashion, the Green River High School Speech and Debate Team brought home another first-place finish.
This past weekend the students traveled to Greybull for its tournament; and the trip paid. With 90 points, GRHS grabbed first place, Kelly Walsh took second with 41 points and Riverton settled for third place with 37 points.
“This tournament was very well run and there was some good competition,” head coach Carina White said. “It did a lot to prepare us for state and districts as we are now a week and a half out from state.”
This finish might just be what the team needs for this weekend’s competition, which will take place in Worland. Although the team is preparing for state and districts, they want to be ready for Worland also. This is the last tournament in the regular season.
“Worland is always a great tournament for us and it is a really large tournament this year so it will be a great last chance to debate topics and practice interpretation in competition,” White said.
“We have to fine tune pieces and do everything on our power to research and practice and be prepared. I am excited for state and districts, but also aware it is going to be a tough road at state,” White said. “This year is the most competitive it has been and our team is young and doesn’t have as much experience as in previous seasons. If we can repeat our performance at Natrona from this season we can win, we are going to give it our best shot.”
The team plans to have longer practices this week for the upcoming tournaments.
White was impressed with some of the team member’s performances this past weekend. Abigaile Grubb won informative speaking again this weekend; and our public forum debaters closed out finals, she said.
