Green River High School wrestlers are well on their road to victory and are headed to Casper for the state tournament.
The wrestling team competed at the regional tournament Friday and Saturday, at Kelly Walsh High School, also in Casper. Green River won the tournament with 264.5 points.
"As a team we wrestled about as good as we can and I am excited about that," head coach Marshall Rhodes said.
Green River finished in first, followed by Natrona with 201 points, Evanston; 174, Riverton; 166.5, Rock Springs; 162, and Kelly Walsh with 126.
Green River wrestlers Cyro Montoya, Caleb Nathan, Gage Byers, Nathan McCann, Shandon Welsh, Brendan Hopkins, and Jordan Tucker finished the tournament as regional champions and received all-conference honors.
Other GRHS wrestlers also placed well in the tournament. Kaycee Cochrane ended in second place. Justin Flores, Jacob Mortensen, Ira Dickinson, Dylan VanGieson, and Blake Waite all placed in third. Chance Anderson placed fourth.
GRHS wrestlers Dan Mondragon, Talbert Bowen, Garrett Harris, Eric Clingenpeel, Zack Orr, Russell Ferrell, Justin Rubalcaba, James McCarter, and Keanu Hill also competed in the tournament.
Next week is the state wrestling tournament and GRHS is the reigning regional tournament champions going onto the mat. State will not be an easy win though and they will have their work cut out for them. There are aspects of the match the Wolves' wrestlers still need to improve on before going into the tournament.
"We need to get better at finishing shots and clearing bottom so that will be the focus this week," Rhodes said.
Green River qualified 21 wrestlers, and some good seeds to go with it.
"Gillette is still the favorite so we need to wrestle better than we have all year. If we all do that I think we have a chance," Rhodes said. "It is in our hands now."
