For the second week in a row, the Green River Speech and Debate Team had to settle for a second-place finish.
Once again, Cheyenne East grabbed the top spot with 63 points, GRHS claimed second with 44 and Rock Springs took third with 32 points.
“We have work to do leading up to state; there are only two more tournaments before state,” head coach Carina White said. “I think that a state championship is absolutely within our reach, but we have to make the right choices for the state squad and we have to really work hard. I have said it before, but our team is young.”
To make state even more difficult, the number of students who can attend is limited.
One of the constraints at the state tournament is the team cannot do two events in one pattern and they cannot do more than two events total. With a limit of 18 entries per school, the playing field is leveled for everyone. Green River really needs to go head to head with the other competitors if they want that state title.
“The team is tired, but motivated and they know what they need to do in the next couple of weeks,” White said. “The team wants to win; plain and simple, and they are frustrated by the last couple of weeks, but motivated.”
The team plans to attend the Greybull tournament this weekend. White said it is a smaller tournament, but it will give the team the opportunity to perfect some of their pieces.
“We need to get our feet under the new debate topics in public-forum debate and Lincoln-Douglas debate; this past weekend was the first time we debated them in competition,” White said.
Despite the second-place finishes, the team continues to improve and knows it can do better.
This week, several students stood out, including Hayley Lauze and Jesse Lauze who won cross examination debate, while Allison Kloepper and Kyle Thomas took second in public-forum debate and Abigaile Grubb took third in Lincoln Douglas debate.
