Sweetwater County School District No. 2 recently hired two new coaches to head up the Green River High School track and cross country programs.
Dan Hansen was hired as the high school’s outdoor track coach and will start March 7. Hansen is a physical education teacher at the high school was was the Wyoming Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance teacher of the year last fall. Hansen has 26 years experience teaching and coaching experience in track and football.
Hansen graduated from Chadron State University in Nebraska, where he competed for the school’s track and football teams. He has coached several state champions in track events and has coached two state champion football teams.
The Wolves’ new cross county coach will be Craig Leavitt, who has worked in Washington Elementary School’s special education department for the past three years. He grew up in Big Piney, but transferred to Green River in 2007, where he ran for the cross-country team during his senior year in high school. He later competed on the cross country and track and field teams at Black Hills State University in South Dakota. He was two-time national qualifier in cross country and the steeplechase while in college.
Leavitt returned to Green River in 2013, where he has worked as an assistant cross country coach at GRHS for the past two seasons.
“Sweetwater County School District No. 2 and GRHS are extremely pleased to have two quality individuals and experienced coaches in our activities program,” activities director Tony Beardsley said in a media release. “Both Dan and Craig represent the standard of excellence that we are looking for in our sports offerings here at GRHS.”
