Green River Council rejects electrical contract bid

The Green River City Council rejected a bid for the city’s electrical maintenance at Tuesday’s meeting.

The city’s previous electrical contract agreement is now expired. The bid proposed by Mountain West Electrical Inc. was 50-61 percent higher than the previous city electrical contracts.

By rejecting the bid for a city-wide electrical contract, this allows the various city departments can call any electrical work provider for a quote, and will contract out individually for each project or work that needs done. The individual departments that need the work will decide who they need for the job, and use the city’s purchasing policy as a guideline for their procedures.

“Each department would like the option to pick their electrician when they have needs at their facilities,” parks and recreation department director Brad Raney said. “That and the cost, is why we would like to reject it.”

Councilman Gary Killpack voiced concerns over the situation.

“Do you think it will be more cost effective doing it this way, instead of having it the way it was before,” Killpack asked.

“At the rate it was proposed in this bid, it basically guarantees we’ll have really high rates if we were to accept the bid. So compared to what the bid was here, yes, I think it will be a savings,” Raney replied. “We can always go out to bid again if it doesn’t work out.”

Raney said doing it this way also gives each department the ability to compare prices at local businesses and decide which business the department feels is the best fit for the job. The parks and recreation department manages most of the city’s facilities, so the department would end up making many of the decisions. The water treatment plant is under a different department and have some unique facilities, so the new situation gives them the opportunity to hire out who they think would be best suited for their facility.
