Wrestlers beat Rock Springs, Riverton

The Green River High School varsity wrestling team dominated their matches against closest rival, Rock Springs Saturday. Green River ended the day with 47 points, Rock Springs with 23. The same day, Green River demolished their Riverton opponents as well. Green River finished with 67 points, to Riverton's seven points.

GRHS junior varsity wrestlers went up against Riverton, Evanston and Rock Springs as well, winning 22 out of 26 matches.

"A few of them are going to be ready to compete for a top four at regionals," head coach Marshall Rhodes said. "Overall it was a tough week."

Thursday, before Green River's performances against Rock Springs and Riverton, the wrestlers faced Star Valley and didn't compete as well.

"We got beat up in Star Valley because we didn't compete very well in close matches," Rhodes said.

Star Valley, the number one ranked 3A wrestling team in the state, gave Green River a run for their money. Green River lost to Star Valley, 21-35.

"Star Valley is a good team and they were better than us on Thursday," Rhodes said. "We got outworked and made a lot of technical mistakes that we have to fix right now."

Rhodes said what cost them some of their matches on Thursday was not being in good enough shape to last through the last minute of the match.

"No doubt we need to get in better shape, but that is something that we can control and we need to take care of it right now."

The Green River wrestlers are now preparing for a tournament in Riverton coming up this weekend.

"Hopefully we will have a good week of practice before the Riverton tournament and wrestle with more intensity," Rhodes said. "We are looking forward to the tournament this coming weekend because it will give us a chance to see all the teams in the state."
