There's always time for pool

Despite the winter weather conditions Monday, a handful of Green River seniors were playing pool.

It might have been snowing most of the day Monday, but that didn't stop a group of guys going to the Golden Hour Senior Center to play pool.

This is something they seem to do every day.

"There's usually a lot more of us," pool player Terry Krentz said.

Krentz said normally a few tables are in use, but Monday there was only one. Krentz said he always shows up from 8-10:30 a.m.

"We all like hanging out together and shooting pool," Krentz said.

"It gets you out of the house for a couple of hours and you get to have a cup of coffee," pool player Bo Riley said.

During a regular game of pool, there is a lot of teasing going on and a lot of coffee drinking.

"We usually have coffee all the way through," pool player Ray McLain said.

Even though the senior center hosts pool tournaments, these players rarely participate in them.

Riley said he participates in the tournaments sometimes. His friend Krentz said he just doesn't feel he is as good of a player as those at the tournaments.

Plus, in Krentz' opinion, the tournaments just last too long. Krentz said the tournaments can go into the afternoon, but he is done around 10:30 a.m.

"It would surprise you how serious they take their pool," Riley said about the players in the pool tournaments.

For the group of gentlemen at the pool tables on Monday morning, the game is more about socializing and having a good time. These are things that seem to get lost in the pool tournament competitions.

Any senior is welcome to join these and many other pool players any day of the week at the GHSC from 8-10:30 a.m.
