The Green River High School varsity boys basketball team have been hitting the court hard, but struggle with earning a notch in the win column.
The Green River boys played against Evanston Thursday, playing a tough match for the first half of the game, but found themselves down eight points by halftime. Each quarter proved more trying.
“We really focused our defensive efforts on Evanston’s Brock Ehlers. He was averaging 18.8 points a game,” head coach Laurie Ivie said. “Defensively, we held him to eight points, so that was a big positive take away from the game.”
While the Wolves were watching him though, another Evanston player stepped up and scored 22 points that night. Before then, Ivie said he’d averaged 6.9 points per game. The game ended with a loss to Evanston, 65-43.
The Wolves then went up against Riverton Saturday.
“We knew we needed to focus on our starts,” Ivie said.
They started well and developed a lead. As the game continued, Riverton got closer and closer to closing the gap. Halftime was a tie.
“Third quarter proved to be our Achilles’ heel,” Ivie said.
Riverton gained in the third quarter and took the lead. By fourth quarter, Green River was down 10 points. Green River sophomore Gavin Heiser scored 10, helping close the gap to four points near the end of the game.
“With time running short, we had to foul to stop the clock,” Ivie said.
As the result of a few Riverton free throws, the point deficit increased and the game ended with a final score of 69-61; a close, gritty loss for Green River.
Two Green River players who were high scorers for the team during the game, were sophomore Cameron Morris, making 16 points and Senior Trevor Zumwalt, scoring 12 points.
“Trevor Zumwalt played his best game of the season,” Ivie said.
Next, the varsity Wolves will set their sights on Green River’s closest neighbors, the Rock Springs Tigers.
