Mustang Men’s Basketball will open home Region IX North play against Casper College tonight at 7:30 p.m. in Rushmore Gymnasium, in a contest that should determine sole ownership of first place, at least for now.
The Mustangs come into this week’s game with a 14-3 overall record and plenty of momentum, having won three straight, including two road games last weekend versus Miles City and Little Big Horn. Casper, at 12-4, also comes into Rushmore Gymnasium with a three-game win streak.
“Needless to say, it’s a big game for both teams,” Mustang coach Ryan Orton said Tuesday. “Both squads are solid ball clubs and it should be a pretty high-level game.”
The men’s game will be preceded by the women’s game between these two schools at 5:30 p.m. The Mustang women head into this week’s action with a 1-1 North record and 9-5 overall. They will host a Casper team that has dominated in the early season, going 15-2 overall and 2-0 so far in North play.
“They’re good,” Mustang coach Garett Sherman said of the Thunderbirds. “They’re ranked No. 14 in the nation, and they’re very deserving of it. They have players at every position and a lot of size. We’re going to have to play really well to stay in the game with them.”
Despite the split result in last weekend’s games and a few other setbacks in winnable losses for his team, Sherman said he’s pleased with the squad’s progress.
“I feel like we have quite a bit of talent on our team. All we’re really waiting for is for our players to jell and just learn to play together,” he said.
The Mustang men and women will be in action again on Saturday, Jan. 16, when Gillette College comes to Rock Springs. The women are scheduled to tip at 3 p.m. and the men at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
