The Green River High School wrestling team will host The Thoman Invitational this weekend, Jan. 15-16. The tournament will start Friday at 11 a.m., at the high school. There will be 14 teams competing at the tournament including teams from Wyoming, Colorado, Utah and Nebraska. Each team will dual eight times throughout the two days.
"There will be a handful of good teams that will be able to compete for the championship," head coach Marshall Rhodes said. "We need to have a good week of practice so we can compete better than we did last weekend."
GRHS wrestlers fought a tough fight at the Tournament of Champions in Vernal, Utah last weekend. They wrestled against teams from Wyoming, Utah and Colorado.
As a team, varsity finished sixth out of 28 teams. In the individual placements, varsity wrestler Cyro Montoya placed first.
"Cyro Montoya has been a great leader in our program for two years and has made improvements to be one of the best 106 pounders around this area," Rhodes said. "He works hard in practice and competes well in every match."
Gage Byers placed third, and Brendan Hopkins placed fourth. Caleb Nathan placed sixth, and Shandon Welsh placed seventh.
The Junior Varsity wrestling team finished fourth, out of sixteen teams.
Junior varsity wrestlers Tanner Adam and Justin Rubalcaba placed first.
Darrik Erickson and Manny Lopez placed third. Mikel Moser placed fourth.
Rhodes said a few of the Junior Varsity wrestlers are making their way to competing against varsity wrestlers soon.
Rhodes said varsity and junior varsity need improvement for the upcoming home tournament this weekend.
"If we aren't better and don't fix some mistakes we will not win our duals," he said.
He said the team needs to get back to the basics of wrestling in order to improve. It's fundamental mistakes that are costing them their matches.
"I am looking forward to this week of practice before our tournament to see if we can fix some of these things," Rhodes said. "The wrestlers like to wrestle at home so I expect them to compete hard in all our matches."
