Boys prep for Cheyenne tournament

The Green River High School’s varsity boys basketball team has the confidence to face the Cheyenne teams head on at the Taco John’s Invitational, Jan. 7-9.

The team also has the humbleness to know they can learn from their experience playing Cheyenne, no matter the outcome.

“I want to play them. Maybe they’ll beat us bad, but we can take what we got from them and use it to our advantage,” player Cameron Morris said. “There’s no individuals on our team. We’re a team no matter what.”

“We’re a defense oriented team,” player Hunter Spartz said. “That’s what it’s going to come down to is, defense is going to win games for us.”

Coach Laurie Ivie said the boys were practicing hard over the holiday break, and practiced every day except for Christmas and the weekends.

The goals they are working toward over the break, preparing for the Cheyenne tournament, is their zone offense and their defense positioning. They are also working on their ball handling and passing; taking care of the ball. Their goal is to get better, she said.

“We take every opportunity we can to focus on us and get better,” Ivie said. “Working to better the things that we already have in place.”

“As long as we focus on our goals and accomplish what our coach wants us to, we’ll go out and win,” player Devin Love said.
