Boys earn win over Idaho team
A shadow that loomed over Green River High School and the high school boys basketball program has lifted. The two-year, 58-game streak of no won games has ended. The high school basketball program as a whole is winning. The Junior Varsity and Freshman basketball teams are thus far undefeated in the season, and Varsity snagged their first win of the season at the Flaming Gorge Classic this weekend.
Their triumph came at the end of their tournament game against the Grace, Idaho team. The ending score, 50-45. The feeling of accomplishment was in the air.
"You could even feel it towards the point in the game when we kind of knew that it was closing in on it being a win," head coach Laurie Ivie said. "The energy was big, the excitement was big."
When the game finished, the entire GRHS student section came onto the court to congratulate the team. The team kept their feeling of euphoria to a minimum though, before refocusing for their next game.
"We have a focused group of athletes," Ivie said. "Everybody was excited, and then it's like, let's refocus because we still have to work tomorrow because we have another game."
The players are simply relieved they don't have to hear about the streak anymore, and continue to further their game and season as a team.
"It just gave us something to strive for, something we had to get," player Cameron Morris said. "It's going to be a tough road but we can compete. We compete with every team, as long as we work hard and work on defense."
"I'm glad that we could be the program that finally turned things around and broke it and start winning again," player Devin Love said.
The team knew they had to take the win and be humble about it moving on into the next game. There was no time to spare and no room for boasting.
"It was a moment thing, and what we gotta take from it is being humble, be humble about the win, be classy," Morris said. "And just take everything that we did from that game and transition it into another game and keep winning."
"Just because we won one, doesn't mean we're done," Love said.
