Children's giggles and smiles fill the room as they intently listen to lines from the book "The Day the Crayons Came Home" being read to them by librarians' theatrical voices. A page featuring the glow-in-the-dark crayon was actually glowing in the dark, with a back background.
"Awesome," the Washington Elementary School first graders said in unison. They really enjoyed that page.
Librarians at the Sweetwater County Library read six books to the first grade classes Thursday, as part of the statewide Wyoming Reads program. After all six books were read aloud, the students chose which book they would like to have as their own. A book each will be bought and ordered for every first grade student. The books will be presented to them in the spring, for the 2016 Wyoming Reads celebration.
Wyoming Reads is a program started and funded by The Sue Jorgensen Library Foundation. John Jorgensen established the foundation in 1996 in memory of his late wife who was an advocate for early-reading literacy. The books are given to all first graders to nurture an early enthusiasm for reading.
Also, as part of the event, the first graders receive a tour of the library, and make book-themed crafts. Before they leave, all of the first graders have a chance to sign up for a library card, if they do not already have one.
