It's a brand new basketball season for Green River High School, with new players, and a new boys basketball coach, Laurie Ivie. The fresh varsity boys basketball team will kick off their 2015-2016 season with a game against Star Valley High School. The game is 7 p.m., Dec. 11 at the GRHS gymnasium.
Ivie said it is difficult to gage how good some other teams around the region will be this year because they have new coaches as well. Star Valley has a new coach this year, as well as Rock Springs, Evanston, and Riverton.
"Irregardless of our competition, it's more about us continuing to get better one game at a time," Ivie said. "I think it will be hard to predict what those other teams are going to look like, because they're under new leadership."
As Green River waits in anticipation to see what the coming basketball season will bring, the GRHS varsity boys basketball team is preparing hard for the games ahead. The team is going for a win, hoping to get out of the losing slump the boys basketball teams have suffered in the past two years.
"The 56 game losing streak haunts us," Ivie said. "It's the big thing everybody wants to talk about. What I want to say about that is the past is always a part of us regardless, but it doesn't define us."
The boys are working hard, taking every opportunity to better themselves, Ivie said. The team has morning practices as well as every weekday after school.
"It's part of the past history of the school and the team in general, but it certainly doesn't define who we are today moving forward."
