The Sweetwater County School District No. 2 Board of Trustees voted to issue a request for proposal regarding virtual equipment simulators.
The board initially heard a presentation about the simulators last month, when Special Services Director Alan Demaret said the simulators could be used to help students in the special services department obtain higher paying jobs.
The simulators discussed at that time were a forklift simulator and a heavy equipment simulator that could be used to train for multiple types of equipment.
Demaret said last month the training could mean the difference between a student receiving a grocery stocking job and a higher-paying job helping unload shipments made to the store.
According to board documents, the department will request proposals from companies to provide simulations for forklifts and excavators. The simulators will include the operator chair with joysticks and petals, along with software and display monitors. The district has allocated $100,000 to the simulators, which comes from a federal grant issued to the district.
While the simulators are planned for use by students involved with the special services department,
Demaret said the simulators could eventually be opened up to other students at Green River High School or Expedition Academy.
