Josie Givens named all-state
A run at the VA Hospital in Sheridan wrapped up the cross-country season for Green River and ended with a top-five finish for one of the Wolves.
Senior Josie Givens finished at 19:14.02, a time that would have resulted in a fourth-place finish for her. However, due to illnesses and injury, head coach Steve Boyd said he was unable to field a full girls team at the state meet. Regardless, Boyd is proud of the girls who competed, as well as of Givens’ All-State nod.
“It was nice to see Josie get in the top five,” Boyd said. “She followed her race place to a ‘T’ and did a great job.”
Boyd said Kaisa Arnell also ran a great race and Kiersten Plott ended up running the her best race of the season in Sheridan. Boyd expects to increase the girls numbers for cross country next year, saying he’s had a few verbal commitments from eighth graders on the Lincoln Middle School cross-country team.
As for the boys side of the boys’ side of the cross country team, Boyd said they finished at where he expected them to. While the team will lose senior Curtis Westenskow, Boyd believes the team will need to continue practicing through the summer months if the Wolves are to finish better at state.
Overall, he says the team had a good season and said he worked with a great group of students. He also said he is thankful for his assistant Craig Leavitt for the input Leavitt provided throughout the season.
