The GRHS varsity volleyball team is well on their way toward regionals and state. Green River comes away from the weekend with a win and a loss. Thursday was the conference game against Kelly Walsh High School in Casper; Kelly Walsh winning three out of the four matches.
“They were a bunch of really tight games,” head coach Rikki Shantz said. “It could’ve gone either way, but we came up a little short.”
The next day however, on Friday, Green River came up on top, beating Natrona with three wins out of five sets.
Within the short time between the two games, Shantz drove home a message to the players, to become just 2 percent better. Shantz said she wanted the girls to be just a little bit better at what they can control; themselves.
“It was just focusing on the right thing at that natrona game,” Shantz said. “They kind of over think things. Being 2 percent better, they hit a little better, passed a little better, blocked a little better.”
That little boost is what they needed, and won.
Varsity volleyball played Evanston Tuesday night and lost.
Next, Varsity volleyball plays a home game against Riverton at 6 p.m., Friday.
Friday’s game will be their last conference game before regionals.
Green River Varsity Volleyball is high in placement for regionals, placing six in two in conference games so far. They’ve won six games and lost two.
With conference games coming to a close, every game against any school is a key factor in placing high in school rankings for regionals. A few schools they are especially watching out for though, who are also ranked high in conference game wins are Evanston, Natrona and Kelly Walsh.
“It’s the last week of conference play,” she said. “Every team is trying to move themselves up, so we’re not overlooking anybody.”
