Varsity runner takes 1st place

GRHS varsity cross country-runner Josie Givens won the race; the varsity girls 5,000-meter run. The race took place at the White Mountain Golf Course in Rock Springs, against runners from schools around the region. Givens' race time was 20:03.70. The next runner up came in 24 seconds later.

Givens was a State runner last year and a two time all-conference runner.

"She's one of the top girls," coach Steve Boyd said. "She has a chance maybe to be conference champion, it's a possibility. We're hoping for a top 10 when we finish at State."

This weekend's race in Rock Springs was the last regular season meet outside of Regionals and State. Along with Givens, two varsity boys made it into the top 10 for the last race; the varsity 5,000-meter run. In ninth place was Braden Reichl, and in tenth place was Brayden Kovick.

"We're wrapping up the season. We're at the end of the season now and we're hoping to get some of the best performances," Boyd said. "Our boys have improved a lot and looking forward to seeing how they finish up."

The Varsity Cross Country will finish up with Regionals this Friday in Evanston, and State in Sheridan Oct. 24.

Boyd said the girls might not field for state because the team has really taken a hit with injuries and illness this season. Three out of seven girls raced in Rock Springs over the weekend; the rest were out of commission. There needs to be five runners to make a full team for State, Boyd said.

"I don't know what we're going to do here at the end of the season," Boyd said. "We may not field a full team of five at Regionals and State of girls, but we certainly will boys."
