Notes from Town Square: Markets build a community

The rain wasn’t the only thing that was consistent on Wednesday afternoons from July to September; the 2015 Farmers Market kept it company. To give Mother Nature a break, there were a few markets that rain did not make an appearance.

Despite the weather there were many vendors, first time market goers, faithful market goers and plenty of goods lining Roosevelt Street. A wide variety of items were available: breads, soups, raw milk, paintings, jewelry, quilts, homemade vanilla, hand carved pens, pastries and many more accompanying the expected fruits and vegetables.

For some of the vendors it was their first time putting themselves and their products out for all to see; others have been participating since the market began in 2008. Whether they were the new kid on the block or a veteran: each came with hopes that the community would support their business along with the others.

Thankfully the hopes of the vendors were not in vain. The Green River community was very supportive of this year’s Farmers Market season. Many were seen each week to get their go-to items.

Some stuck to their favorites while others ventured out of their familiar purchase to find more goods to take home.

As a semi-new member to Green River and a very new member of the URA/Main Street Agency, I was impressed with the support of our local vendors from the community, the dedication of vendors week after week, how the vendors supported one another and how just one customer could make a vendors day.

Without the support of our community many things would not be possible. The community is not just those that attend events or programs it’s also those that get out and help make them happen, the business owners, vendors for events, volunteers, city employees and anyone that has taken time to share event information, whether it be by word of mouth or on social media.

To those that attended the Farmers Market: thank you and see you next year. To those that didn’t: see you next year.
