Boys tennis doubles dominates regionals

The Green River High School boys varsity tennis doubles teams swept regionals this weekend, winning every doubles bracket.

"We took home the most boys championships," Tennis coach Phil Harder said.

Taking home the number one doubles bracket were GRHS players McCaden Mikesell and Ian Ebert. Winners of the number two doubles bracket were twins Patrick and Gregory Marchal. The winning team of the number three doubles bracket was duo Evan Carollo and Cody Lee.

The wins weren't all fun and games though, they fought for their results.

"Me and Ian just played aggressive more than what we did the whole entire season," McCaden Mikesell said. "We came up with strategies before we even went on the court and went off of that."

"We definitely needed to start the match aggressive," Ian Ebert said.

Mikesell and Ebert played against Laramie, a competitive team they'd played against before. They knew their strengths and knew where to hone their skills to take the game.

"We had high intensity throughout the whole match, rather than being slow and flat footed," Mikesell said.

Patrick and Gregory Marchel won the number two bracket with a win, then a loss, which forced them to go into a third match, and won again. The struggle was real for the twins when their finals match against Rock Springs was three hours long.

"We were by far the closest match," Gregory Marchel said.

"The last match was definitely stamina," Patrick said. "We worked hard to get every point we could; we never gave up."

The boys ran into some difficulty in their second match and were caught up in their lost points. They soon realized they had to stay in the moment, think positively and look forward, not behind.

"As soon as you think you're going to lose, you will lose," Patrick said.

They thought about the points at hand, and won.

"You gotta just do it," Evan Carollo of number three doubles, said.

The win for the number three doubles was also full of obstacles and triumphs. They were confident, going into regionals seeded number one. Their first match was against Cheyenne South.

"They scared us," Carollo said.

The GRHS number three doubles team were down 1-4, losing that match in their first set.

"I looked at Cody and I said 'Alright, we need to get in our game. Let's do this. Let's go out and win."

They came back in the second set, beating them 6-1.

"We got into our groove in that game," Carollo said.

"It gave us a reality check that we can be beat," partner Cody Lee said.

"But that we also can come back from a deficit," Carollo said.
