Kids and families are invited to come enjoy fun and exciting activities during the “Sensory Field Day” hosted by the Sweetwater County Child Developmental Center. The event is Friday from 9 a.m. to noon at both SCCDC locations in Rock Springs and Green River.
This Family Friday is all about sensory play activities. Sensory play includes any activity that stimulates a child’s senses: touch, smell, taste, sight and hearing. Stimulating the senses sends signals to a child’s brain that help to strengthen neural pathways important for all types of learning.
During the event, kids will move through various stations that encourage them to use their senses to play. Some activities include an obstacle course, balance games, healthy eating, pattern designs, parachute challenges and much more.
“Young children learn with all their senses. This is an important for their overall development. Children need to have whole-body sensory experiences to develop strong bodies and minds. This is best done when the senses are fully engaged and young bodies are challenged by the uneven and unpredictable activities like what the stations at our event will offer,” SCCDC Physical Therapist Crystal Profaizer said.
Families will also learn about the importance of integrating sensory play at home. Each station will feature take-home activities families can do with their children to encourage sensory play in a fun-interactive way.
