I’ve heard some people say recently that there’s nothing to do here in Sweetwater County.
To that I say: Not true! When I first moved to the area five years ago, I also said there was nothing to do here. But that was before I truly took the time to look. And one great place to look, of course, is at the library.
I recently updated the library’s online calendar through the end of October. I personally added more than 100 events. Yes, your read that right, more than 100. Our libraries are full of events and activities for people from age zero to 100. In most weeks, the libraries have three options for Toddler Time – a weekly program to help our youngest Sweetwater County residents learn to enjoy reading and learning. We also have eight options for Story Time, with four of them right here in Green River. Story Time is an early learning event for preschool-aged kids. Also for kids we have LEGO Club weekly at both Rock Springs and White Mountain libraries. And we have a monthly Saturday event at the library in Green River on the second Saturday of the month. The most recent one was this past weekend – it featured LEGOs and Batman. Our Saturday event will be our annual Harry Potter Party on Oct. 10, following the Green River Trunk-or-Treat.
But that’s not all of the events we have coming up. With Halloween right around the corner, we are hosting our annual Zombie Walk Oct. 3. This family-friendly parade will begin at 4 p.m. at the library at 300 N. 1st E. St. If you want to be in the parade, dress in your best Zombie costume and meet at the library a little before 4 p.m. The parade will then make its way down Flaming Gorge Way and will end in a costume contest. If you don’t want to dress like a zombie, make sure to save a space along Flaming Gorge Way to see this spooky parade – we will have candy and everything. Those who are teens and older can stay at the library following the parade and costume contest for a showing of “Night of the Living Dead.”
But we have even more going on. Over in Rock Springs at White Mountain Library, we will have a free Halloween Carnival Oct. 31 from 1 to 3 p.m. Also, our Ghost Walks at the Green River library are approaching fast! The walks will start Oct. 24, but tickets go on sale on Oct. 5 and typically sell out fast. So make sure to drop by the library in Green River that morning, or call 875-3615 to order tickets.
This is just a sampling of what we have going on in the library system. As I mentioned earlier, we have activities for people of all ages. Stop by the library and pick up one of our new Event Guides and find out about teen programs, kids programs, and all the activities going on for adults. You can also check out our newly redesigned website at sweetwaterlibraries.com. You can find all the events listed in this column and more under Events Calendar.
So next time you think there’s nothing to do here in Sweetwater County, make sure to check out what’s happening at your libraries. We always have things going on, and, of course, we have thousands of books to help keep you entertained.
