With their first two meets under their belt, the Green River High School girls swimming and diving team has already qualified swimmers for the state meet.
Diver Brianna Rath qualified in her first competition in Lander Friday. Rath placed second in 1-Meter Diving with a score of 181.25. Fellow Lady Wolf Victoria Allen placed fifth in diving with a score of 146.75. Kayla Majhanovich, diving coach for the swim team said Rath was determined to qualify.
“She did some amazing dives, now we’re going to work on a spectacular list for state,” Majhanovich said.
Rath wasn’t the only Lady Wolf to qualify for state over the weekend. Avery Otto-Horn, Ashley Jensen, and Dakota Newmann also qualified for state competition. Otto-Horn qualified for five events so far while Jensen has qualified for three. Newmann has qualified for the 100-backstroke so far.
Head coach Colleen Seiloff said it isn’t uncommon for swimmer to qualify for state competition in the early meets and believes a number of other Lady Wolves will add their names to the state qualifiers in the coming weeks. Across the team, Seiloff said the Lady Wolves have solid swims throughout both the Lander and Rawlins competitions, saying she is especially happy with the strong finishes the swimmers are posting.
While the swim team’s next competition takes place at home, Seiloff said the team will have to remain focused as Lander comes to Green River Thursday for a dual between the two schools. The competition marks the first time the Lady Wolves have competed in the new aquatics center, as well as the first time in several years Lander has visited Green River.
Seiloff said both the girls and boys teams from Lander are strong contenders in the 3A Division, with a history of placing or winning state swimming competitions and should give the Lady Wolves some good competition.
The dual starts at 4 p.m. at the aquatics center.
