September is Library Card Sign-up Month -- a time when libraries across the country remind parents that a library card is the most important school supply of all.
The observance was launched in 1987 to meet the challenge of then Secretary of Education William J. Bennett who said: “Let’s have a national campaign...every child should obtain a library card - and use it.” Since then, thousands of public and school libraries join each fall in a national effort to ensure every child does just that.
During the month of September, the Sweetwater County Library System will get library card applications into the hands of all students through Sweetwater County. Be on the lookout for your child’s application in the papers sent home from school. We invite students without a library card to return the application to the library for a new card and those with a library card to make sure their information is correct.
Libraries play an important role in the education and development of children. Studies show that children who are read to in the home and who use the library perform better in school and are more likely to continue to use the library as a source of lifetime learning. A library card also provides access to powerful research databases, test preparation programs (including the SAT and ACT) and software, and free online tutoring services. A library card is truly one of the most important school supplies of all.
Library Card Sign-up Month, however, just isn’t for students. We invite everyone to get a library card or replace a lost or worn out card. There is no cost for a replacement library card.
If you haven’t been to your library in a while, you’re missing out. The library offers several fabulous services: you can check out DVDs, music CDs, books on CD, download e-books -- and don’t forget good old-fashioned books in print. You can also access the Internet and genealogical databases, browse and check out magazines and newspapers, and attend various workshops and events. The library provides basic office services including faxing, copying and even notary services.
The library has a fantastic collection of digital items that can be used from home or on the go with a tablet, smartphone or other portable device. All these services can be accessed by clicking on the ebooks, movies, and more tab on the library’s website at http://www.sweetwaterlibraries.com.
If you haven’t visited the library’s website in a while it has a new look. We hope everything is easier to find, but if not let us know. One of the best features is our new events calendar. On it you can find a list of all the workshops, events and activities that are happening all across the library system and at the Community Fine Arts Center. You’ll see in September we have a LEGO Batman event at the Sweetwater County Library in Green River, a Back Country Navigation class at the Rock Springs Library, a book sale at the White Mountain Library, a watercolor exhibit at the Community Fine Arts Center and much more.
Also with a new look and feel, the online library catalog. Use the online library catalog to search for library materials in libraries in Sweetwater County and libraries throughout the state of Wyoming, place a hold on an item, and renew items. Remember, with a Sweetwater County library card you can check items out from any library in our county, any public library in Wyoming and any community college library in Wyoming. So what are you waiting for? Get your library card today.
