Like the falling of the leaves, cooler temperatures and longer evenings, the first day of school is one of those signs that summer is coming to an end.
Today, students in Green River started their first day of classes and like students throughout the city, those attending Green River High School were both anxious and excited for the upcoming year.
Bailee Roberts, a freshman, said she feels both emotions as the school year starts. Her nervousness stems from transitioning into a larger school, but looks forward to performing with the high school dance team.
For junior Katelynn Carter, she's excited for the new year to start, as she looks forward to see her friends and attend classes.
"I enjoy the school work," she said.
However, she does admit she is nervous about the tests she'll be required to take as a junior, especially the ACT, which is used by many colleges and universities as part of their admissions process.
She said she aims to do her best, but fears she may have to take the ACT a second time as she experiences test anxiety while working on exams.
Her brother, Caleb Carter, doesn't share his older sister's enthusiasm for school.
The younger Carter said he doesn't want to go back to school, but does look forward to the physical education and strength training courses he signed for.
For some of the teachers, the new school year can't come soon enough.
"I'm ready. I love summer but it's nice to get right back into that routine," GRHS teacher and student council sponsor Amanda Santhuff said Tuesday.
Storm Adcock, who teaches economics and psychology, looks forward to seeing how students respond to tweaks in class requirements, if the changes made in the curriculum will improve student performance.
Don Maggi, who teaches social studies, looks forward to his new advanced placement government class.
This will be Maggi's first year teaching the class and is excited to work with the seniors signed up.
"I'm ready to go back to work," he said.
