Hoping to introduce more children to the local football programs, the city’s parks and recreation department will host flag football games later this month.
Kevin Sadler, recreation supervisor for sports programs, said the Little Howler Youth Flag Football League is aimed at both boys and girls from kindergarten to third-grade ages. He said Parks and Recreation Director Brad Raney hosted a similar program in Casper and brought the idea with him when he took over the department.
The program strives to teach the fundamentals of football to children in a format that allows parents not to worry about injuries. Groups are organized into teams, complete with volunteer coaches. Sadler also said the department hopes to see the program start feeding into the other youth football programs aimed at older children.
Sadler said the games start Aug. 24 at the Stratton Myers ballfields, with games currently scheduled to start at 6 p.m. Sadler said the teams will play through seven games from Aug. 24 to Oct. 1. He also said the games’ scores, along with records of winners and losers, won’t be kept.
“It’s like the youth soccer,” Sadler said.
