The Bitter Sweet Bombshells will host Casper’s Deadly Ghosts in a bout titled “Space Jam” Saturday. The bout starts at 6 p.m., at the Rock Springs Recreation Center. The Bombshells bested the Deadly Ghosts earlier in the season and are looking to maintain their rank.
Tickets for the bout are on sale at the Rock Springs and Green River Chambers of Commerce and from any Bombshells team member. Big Brothers Big Sisters also has tickets available.
Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door. As always the Bombshells donate 50 percent of the proceeds of their bouts to a worthy cause. The proceeds from this bout will benefit YMCA’s Big Brothers Big Sisters. The remaining proceeds go toward hosting future bouts. Sweetwater County Roller Derby operates as a non-profit.
This is the second season for the Bitter Sweet Bombshells and they’ve begun to develop a reputation for being the up and coming team in the Wyoming Derby scene. The Bombshells have captured three victories this season. First, they beat Casper’s Deadly Ghosts early in the season. Next, in a rematch bout at home, they defeated Heart Mountain Wreck on Wheels. At the Wyoming Derby Cup the Bombshells conquered the Jackson Hole Juggernauts, a team that brutalized the Bombshells last season.
“Although roller derby has developed the reputation for being a rowdy sport, you may be surprised to find the girl next door on your local team. The Bombshells are comprised of mothers, educators, professionals, technicians, and everything in between,” Janice Grover-Roosa, a member of the derby team said. “When you support roller derby you aren’t just supporting a sport, you’re supporting women in your community who have come together for the love of derby, and to support the communities in which they live.”
A bout is played by two teams in two, 30-minute halves. Each half is filled with short rounds or “jams” in which the scoring player for each team, the jammer, attempts to lap members of the opposing team.
The teams assist their own jammer in getting through a “pack” of four opposing blockers while simultaneously blocking the other team’s jammer. All players play in the same direction on the track and are essentially playing both offense and defense at all times.
