Chamber installs electronic sign

For the past few weeks, visitors and residents in Green River have probably noticed the large, illuminated sign at the intersection of Flaming Gorge Way and Uinta Drive.

Installed in time for Flaming Gorge Days, the sign is the fruit of the Green River Chamber of Commerce’s 15-month project.

“It was seriously a long project,” Chamber Director Rebecca Eusek, said.

The sign features a 6-foot by 10-foot display that is illuminated with green lighting from above.

At a cost of $70,000, the sign stands 25 feet high and is positioned off of the Wyoming Department of Transportation’s right of way. Eusek said WYDOT does not allow digital signs on their right of way, which forced the chamber to place it behind the wooden fence running along much of the road entering Green River from Exit 91.

The chamber started writing grants for the sign last March and started soliciting donations from area businesses and governing bodies. One of the biggest sponsorships came from the Sweetwater County School District No. 2 Rec. Board, which matched $25,000 toward the sign to help promote athletics and school events.

In addition to displaying community events and information, Eusek said the chamber plans to sell advertising to help cover the cost of maintaining the sign.
