Bike rides continue

The Green River Bike Rides by the Sweetwater Mountain Biking Association are going again this summer. This week’s ride is 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., starting in parking lot B at Scott’s Bottom, FMC Park. The weekly bike rides will continue through October, with weather permitting.

Sweetwater Mountain Biking Association

They initially started in 1999 when the Green River Tourism Committee wanted to promote Green River’s bike trails. Land use issues occurred during the process and plans were cut short. The group tried again in 2009, this time a success.

The SMBA strives to promote responsible mountain biking, protect natural resources, obtain land access for trail development, partner with the community to encourage tourism and a healthy lifestyle by supporting growth of the sport.

As a Green River Chamber committee, the SMBA continues strive to promote Green River as a mountain biking destination.

“Biking is great exercise for all ages. It is wonderful to see kids in the Bike Park or out on the trails enjoying the outdoors rather than sitting inside in front of a computer or TV,” Rebecca Eusek, director of the Green River Chamber of Commerce said. “It is important for kids to learn proper land use and trail etiquette. Hopefully they are passing it on to their friends and family; They are fun to ride.”

The Green River bike trails are optimal for a variety of uses. Hikers and horseback riders have also been seen using the trails. The Wilkins Peak Trails system spans 25 miles. The climate in Green River allows close to year-round riding, Eusek said. Green River’s mild summer climate allows riding while other high desert mountain bike destinations such as Moab, Utah are too hot. Snow depth is minimal during the winter.  Mud season in the Spring is the only time the trails are not rideable, Eusek said.

All in all, the Green River bike trails can be seen as a major asset to the community and at this time of year makes for good conditions on the trails; a perfect time for bike rides.
