The Green River High School boy’s soccer team showed tremendous resolve last Saturday with a 3-2 home win over Kelly Walsh.
The 4A West Conference victory came one day after a tough 2-1 loss to Natrona. The Friday loss against the Mustangs was the first game without five players who were suspended last week for 21 days for unspecified reasons.
In the game against Kelly Walsh, it took Green River only about 10 seconds to score when senior Chase Erickson connected with freshman Christian Alatorre for the first goal of the game.
After the Trojans netted the game at the 15-minute mark, senior Tanner Trumble scored goals a the 38th minute on an assist from senior Kyle Goglio and in the 49th minute on an another assist from Erickson to take a 3-1 lead.
Head coach Chris Bieber said scoring the early goal along with two others gave the team the confidence they needed.
“We had opportunities that we were unable to capitalize on as well so that was very promising,” he said.
The Wolves are now 7-4-1 overall, and 3-2 in 4A West play, just one game behind conference leaders Riverton and Natrona.
“It was a great weekend of soccer for us; we showed that we can compete with Natrona and Kelly Walsh,” Bieber said.
Next up for Green River will be the second round of the Sweetwater Cup against Rock Springs Thursday (6-4-3, 1-3-1 4A West). The road game will take place at 6 p.m.
In the first matchup of the season, the Wolves dominated Green River with a 6-0 victory.
Bieber said the keys to beating Rock Springs will be to do the same thing they did two weeks ago -- have fun, work hard and play Green River soccer.
