The Green River High School girl’s soccer team took sole possession of first place in the 4A West with a weekend sweep of Natrona and Kelly Walsh.
“These were two tough teams for us to play. For us to come out on top is awesome,” head coach Tracy Wyant said.
In their first game of the week Friday, Green River overcame a 1-0 deficit to record a thrilling 3-2 victory and followed that up with a 3-1 win Saturday over Kelly Walsh, another game they trailed 1-0.
It took Natrona just one minute to score Friday, but Green River answered back when McKenzie Lucas found the back of the net at the eight-minute mark.
After going into the break nodded at one, sophomore Taylor Stoeger scored at the 54-minute mark to give Green River a 2-1 lead. A resilient Natrona team answered back with a goal at the 63-minute mark, before Lucas scored to seal the victory at the 71-minute mark.
On Saturday, the Lady Wolves got off to a slow start, and after a scoreless first half fell behind 1-0 at the 43-minute mark.
Freshman Lauren Hoyt answered back one minute later. Her goal opened the flood gates for Green River who took a lead from a goal by Lucas in the 69th minute and another from Stoeger in the 72nd minute.
After the scoreless first half Saturday, Wyant said she told the squad they are the better team, but they are not showing it.
“We need to get our heads up, start connecting on passes, just settle down and play soccer,” Wyant told her team.
In the second half she said the team played much better, started using their teammates, and put passes together.
Wyant is unsure why the team gets off to slow starts, but they always seem to fix it and have a better second half.
The weekend sweep put Green River at 5-0 in 4A West play, a game ahead of Natrona at 4-1.
They will go into their Thursday game at 4 p.m. against Rock Springs (6-6, 2-3 4A West) with a 9-3 overall record.
