Student one-act plays scheduled

Theater buffs will have the chance to see numerous 10 to 15 minute one-act plays tomorrow.

The Green River High School Theater Department will end the season with student directed one-act plays. The free event is scheduled to take place Thursday at 6 p.m. in the GRHS auditorium.

GRHS theater students have been working hard over the past few weeks to perfect their one-act plays; and last week was no different. During their class, students were rehearsing their lines, perfecting facial expression and body reactions, as well as fixing their hair and applying their makeup. Despite the flurry of activity, the students remained focused on what they needed to do.

Director Terrin Musbach said third and fourth year students selected one-act plays for the first and second year students to perform. The third and fourth year students are acting as the directors, while the first and second year students prepared monologues for the student directors to make their selections from.

Musbach said when she says the plays are student directed she means it. Musbach said she just sits back and watches the students in action and gives them advice, which she called a whispering in their ear.

"They have all the skills," she said.

Even though the one-act plays are roughly 10-minutes long, the same work goes into getting ready for them. Selecting the right makeup, costumes, scenery and props are all important to the plays.

The student directors started reading through the massive pile of one-act-play scripts in February, however, some of the students read them over the summer. Of course, there is always some criteria for the students to follow, but other than that the students are on their own, Musbach said.

"It's fascinating really," she said.

The whole unit is based on self discipline; and Musbach is always amazed at what they can accomplish and contribute. One lesson most of the students learn is a leader isn't just someone who gives orders, but is someone who is a good listener.
