In just their second week of the season, the Green River High School had an impressive showing in two meets.
Competing at Big Piney last Friday and Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah Friday, the Wolves picked up four state qualifiers.
Senior Dylan Rust qualified in the discus, junior Tyler Vendetti had a qualifying mark in the long jump, junior Josie Givens qualified in the 1600 meters and senior Holly Huber clinched a state berth in the 100-meter hurdles.
Head coach Steve Boyd said Rust just missed out on qualifying in the shot put, and Givens time of 5:20.92 in the 100 is less than four seconds from a school record. He said she will go after the 800-meter qualifier Friday night at the Alpha Invitational in Orem, Utah.
“It was good to get marks on everyone just to see where we are. The weather was beautiful at both meets,” Boyd said.
Another standout from the weekend was freshman Andri Dewey who Boyd said continued to impress in the 400 meters. Dewey just missed the state qualifying mark in the 400 by six-hundreths of a second. She ran a 1:00.86. The state qualifying time is 1:00.80. She also had an early season time of 27.2 in the 200 meters.
Boyd said Emily White, a transfer from Craig, Colo., had a good day in Big Piney placing first in the discus and second in the shot put.
“She gives us a quality girl thrower who will only get better as the season progresses,” Boyd said.
The team will compete Thursday and Friday at the Alpha Invitational.
