Spring sports coming to GR

Spring in Wyoming is a little bit different than most states.

At one moment it can be a comfortable 60 degrees with not a hint of wind and within seconds, everything changes.

The wind will pick up to 50 MPH and roof shingles can be seen flying all over Green River. Moments later it will be hailing. That will turn into snow and so the story goes.

While the weather can be chaotic, spring in Wyoming also gives local residents the chance for one more season of high school sports, and it just so happens there will be plenty to cheer for in Green River.

For the past several years the two varsity Green River High School soccer teams have started to make noise across the state and last year was a banner year for the programs. The boys team won the regional tournament and finished third and state, while the girls started the season 19-0.

While they both had great seasons, I don’t think either program will be happy without climbing the mountain and bringing Green River its first state titles in soccer.

Much like in any sport, the offseason is where champions are made, and the 2015 teams were busy putting in time.

There will be plenty of chances for residents to come out and see Green River play this season and I really encourage them to do so.

They will see great athletes, great coaching, and a will to win.

It would be nice for them to see huge crowds at Wolves Stadium which is much more accessible and fun to watch a game than their prior digs at Stratton-Myers.

The regional and state tournaments will both be in Rock Springs, and it would be nice to see just as much green as orange in the stands.

The first weekend of action had it’s ups and downs for both teams, but they are far from peaking, and it should be fun to watch their progress.

The spring season also means its’s time for track and field and the Wolves will have some pretty impressive athletes shine during the 2015 campaign.

Unfortunately, the Wolves’ home invite was cancelled due to the crazy spring weather, but there will be a track meet in Rock Springs next week that will allow people to get out and support the Wolves.

Upperclassmen like Josie Givens, one of the best runners in the state, and Tyler Vendetti, one of the best overall athletes in the state, are well worth the price of admission to the meet.

Senior Holly Huber should also be one of the best hurdlers in the state.

Longtime coach Steve Boyd will have the team gelling just in time for conference and they will also gain valuable experience early in the season competing against some of the best teams in Utah.

I’m pretty sure it will be a solid season for all three teams and hopefully they will get the support they deserve. Go Wolves!
