Unlimited possibilities at Sweetwater County libraries

Take a look at today’s libraries, they are far different from the libraries of a century ago. Walking around today’s library, you will find kids playing with LEGOs, teens working on computers, adults researching job opportunities, and preschoolers singing and “shaking their sillies” out during Story Time. Stepping out of the library buildings, patrons still have access to library materials and resources. They can find homework help, eBooks, digital audiobooks, movies and a large selection of databases. These are all available with a library card from home (or anywhere with Internet access). So what do these activities show you? They show that your library offers unlimited possibilities.

It’s April, which means National Library Week is just around the corner, April 13-18. This year for National Library Week the theme is “Unlimited Possibilities @ Your Library,” so we are celebrating all that you can do at your libraries.

National Library Week was first sponsored by the American Library Association in 1958. Held during the second full week in April, National Library Week is a time to celebrate the contributions of libraries and librarians across the country and to promote library use and support. All types of libraries participate in National Library week, including public libraries, academic libraries, school libraries and special libraries.

To help celebrate National Library Week, the libraries here in Sweetwater County have a bunch of activities lined up. On April 13, drop by the libraries for cookies and punch. While you’re here check out books or discover many of the other possibilities that are available.

Throughout the week, we will be debuting our new 3D printers. The printers were donated to the libraries from a company called 3D Systems and the rest of the supplies for the printers have been funded by the Sweetwater County Library Foundation. You will have three opportunities to see the 3D printers in action. On April 13 at 2 p.m. we will have a program at White Mountain Library in Rock Springs, at 6:30 p.m. April 15, we will have a program at the library in Green River, and then at 6:30 p.m. April 16, we will have a program at Rock Springs Library. Stop by and see what can be created with 3D printing!

But that’s not all, we have many more programs going on during National Library Week. Drop by the libraries anytime throughout the week for a chance to win one of our guessing jars. We will have a guessing jar full of goodies for both youth and adults. If you are into cake decorating, put together a literary-themed cake for our Book-Based Cakes Contest. Drop off your cake between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on April 14 to take part in the contest. Judging will take place at 5:30 p.m. Learn about different cultures by attending a Women in Judaism presentation at 5:30 p.m. April 15 at White Mountain Library, or Understanding the Middle East at 7 p.m. on April 15 also at White Mountain Library. If you’re looking to create a beautiful garden this spring, don’t miss our Adventures in Gardening Series taught by local master gardeners at 10:30 a.m. April 18 at Rock Springs Library.

Your libraries offer many possibilities. Along with books, they provide opportunities for learning, discovering, imagining, playing and creating.

Libraries offer technology, digital resources, classes, job resources, kids’ programs and more. Drop by your library during National Library Week and discover the possibilities that are available – they are truly unlimited.
