It wasn’t always evident in the wins and losses, but their was no quit in the 2014-15 Green River High School girl’s basketball team.
The Lady Wolves (2-19, 0-10 4A West) season came to an end last Thursday with a 62-45 loss to Kelly Walsh at the 4A West Regional Tournament in Evanston.
“I thought they did a great job over the course of the year, continuing to work hard and fight,” head coach Rick Carroll said. “They did their best and tried to exactly what we asked them to do. It was fun to work with young ladies that were willing to do that.”
The Lady Wolves started the season with a 2-2 record under the direction of Aric Hanusa. Green River picked up their lone victories of the season at the Flaming Gorge Classic with a 44-43 win over Kemmerer and a 53-22 victory against Manila, Utah.
Hanusa resigned from his position in December and was replaced by Carroll, who was a long time coach of both the boys and girls teams at Green River High School.
Carroll said there was definitely an adjustment period for the girls when he took over, but they were ready to go with the new staff.
“I give them credit for moving forward and doing the best they could,” he said.
Carroll took the job on an interim basis and will not be back next season. He said he wanted to help out, but his issue, much like when he retired from the boy’s head coaching position two-years ago, was that it’s to work on the other things he’s involved with.
“I want them to find someone that has a lot of time to work with the girls this summer and during the offseason to get them working on their skills,” he said.
KELLY WALSH
Following the season-ending loss to Kelly Walsh, Carroll said they had a good game plan, they just had difficulty scoring and didn’t do a good job taking care of the ball.
