Woman pleas not guilty to charges

A woman accused of choking her 15-year-old daughter pleaded not guilty to three felony charges.

Andrea Kay Young of Green River appeared in the Third District Court of Judge Richard Lavery at an arraignment to three counts of child abuse.

If found guilty of all three charges, she could face a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison and a maximum fine of $30,000. After pleading not guilty, a trial date is scheduled to take place April 13 at 9 a.m.

According to court documents, on Nov. 14, 2014, a Green River Police officer responded to an alleged child abuse. After arriving at the Green River residence, the officer met with a 15-year-old girl, identified as her daughter, to talk about the three alleged physical altercations with her mother, Andrea Young.

The girl told the officer that she and her mother started to argue over her boyfriend. She said her boyfriend and one of his friends had been at her house, but the argument took place after they left the house.

The girl said the first argument took place in the hallway between the living and dining rooms. She said it was during this argument that Young became so upset she allegedly grabbed her by the throat with both hands and began to choke.

The girl said it was hard for her to breath and she started getting tunnel vision, but she didn’t totally black out. Young loosed her grip and the girl started to go upstairs, but stumbled a couple times because she said she felt “woozy.”

The daughter said she made it to her bedroom and was calling her boyfriend to tell him what happened when Young came into the bedroom and started yelling at her.

The girl put the phone on speaker so her boyfriend could hear was being said. Young picked up the cell phone, hung it up and threw it against the wall. The girl tried to retrieve the cell phone, but Young allegedly put her into a headlock. She was able to reach the phone, but her mother allegedly kept her in a headlock. The teen said she eventually started to get weak and had shortness of breath so she gave up the phone.

Her mother then left the room and went downstairs. The girl also went downstairs and was putting on her shoes to leave the residence when Young confronted her. The girl said she tried to leave, but Young blocked her way.

When the girl tried to get past Young, Young allegedly grabbed the hoodie the girl was wearing and twisted it around her neckline, which caused the hoodie to choke her. The girl was able to shove past Young, but Young allegedly grabbed the hood and the girl’s hair and pulled.

The officer observed that their were scratches and “closed grip finger” markings on the right side of the daughter’s neck. There were several marks on both sides of her neck. During a follow up interview on Nov. 5, 2014, another officer noticed the same markings on her neck.
