Track opens 2015 season

The Green River High School indoor track team had some outstanding individual finishes last weekend at the Weber State Developmental High School Track Meet.

Head coach Steve Boyd said it was a good meet and everybody seem pleased with their marks for the teams first event of the season.

The highest placer for Green River was standout senior Holly Huber who finished fourth in the 55-meter hurdles.

Junior Josie Givens carried the momentum for a successful cross country campaign with a fifth place finish in both the 1600 and 800-meter races.

Boyd said Givens did a good job and broke her school record in the 1600 shortly after competing in the 800 meters. He said her time should also get better during the season.

Matthew Medina had a strong start to the indoor season with a fourth place finish in the shot put.

Other top ten finishers for the Wolves included Eliza Morin who was sixth in the high jump, Trey McGhee who placed ninth in the long jump, and Curtis Westenskow who finished tenth in 3200-meter run.

Boyd said McGhee did a good job and showed a lot of potential as a freshman.

This Friday the team will once again make the trek to Utah and will compete at a two-day event at the Kearns Olympic Ice Oval.

Boyd said Kearns will be a big meet and the competition should be good at the event. He added a the team is looking forward to competing and the marks usually improve from the first to second meet.

He said a lot of the meets so far this season have been in places like Gillette and Spearfish, S.D., and it doesn’t make a lot of sense to travel that far, when there are good meets closer in Utah.

He said that Tyler Vendetti was not able to compete last week, but should put up good numbers in the long and triple jump when he returns.
