Residents enjoy warm weather in Green River

Residents throughout Green River took advantage of warmer weather occurring early this week, doing things many would typically wait until late March or early April to do.

“I’m getting spring fever and we’re not through winter yet,” City of Green River employee Diane Allen said.

At the Area 51 Skate Park, a group of boys took advantage of the good weather and rode their bikes and scooters around, dressed in T-shirts, not overcoats.

“It’s actually nice,” Carter Paiz, one of the boys said. “It used to get real cold and we’d only be able to stay here till (4 p.m.)”

Another boy at the skate park, Evin Hansen, remembers a much different experience last week.

“It was freezing,” Hansen said.

Heather Phillips, a mother walking her children down Uinta Drive Monday afternoon, said she was worried about weather and what it might mean later this year, though she’ll take the warmer days over colder temperatures.

“It might be snowing in July,” Phillips said. “It’s not supposed to be 55 in January in Wyoming.”

Mike Masterson, a longtime resident of the area, said a January thaw isn’t uncommon for the area, saying he’s seen similar weather activity during the 1970s and 1980s. He said the he’s noticed the colder weather tends to happen in February and March, but added the one time he was snowed out from his job at OCI during his 40 years of employment happened during the middle of May.

Ralph Estell, a forecaster for the National Weather Service in Riverton, agrees with Masterson’s assessment of the January thaw, saying low pressure weather formations tend to get broken up. Currently, a high pressure area weather system is maintaining the warmer temperatures and has resulted in a little rain throughout the county. That system is dissipating however, with Estell predicting snowfall in the area next week. Despite that prediction, Estell said local temperatures should remain in the 40s throughout the rest of the week.
