The Green River Speech and Debate team will have another first-place trophy to add to this year’s collection.
This past weekend, the team traveled to Casper to compete in the Kelly Walsh tournament. The team rose to the occasion and claimed first-place and earned another sweepstakes trophy with 89 points.
“This was one of the biggest tournaments we have attended this season with 28 schools in attendance,” head coach Carina Stulken said.
During this competition, schools from Wyoming, South Dakota and Colorado were in attendance. The team was not intimidated and beat the closest team by 50 points.
“Each week, the students grow both as competitors and as a team. They never cease to amaze me and inspire me with the amount of support they give each other,” Stulken said. “We are heading rapidly towards state and districts so it is important they stay focused on the goals we have set for this season which is another state and district championship.”
Although the team has been dominating the competition, there is always room for improvement.
“If they are continuing to do the same thing every week at practice and not improving something about their cases or performances they will be surpassed by their competition,” she said. “I tell them to not let their competitors outwork them.”
One of the students really shined at the tournament. Maggie Fischer took first place in both of her events this weekend with first-place finishes in oratory and public forum debate.
The team will travel to Evanston this weekend. Although it is a smaller tournament, there will still be a lot of tough competitors at it.
“As always we will practice every day, block cases and perfect our speeches and performances as much as possible,” she said.
