The Green River High School girl’s basketball team showed some positive signs last week at a three-day tournament in Cheyenne.
While the Lady Wolves were unable to pick up a victory, head coach Rick Carroll said the team played hard in all three games, especially on defense.
“Defensively, there were times when we played good, but we were inconsistent,” he said. “There are times we have minutes pushed together we don’t score or allow them to have a run, and we need to work on that.” he said.
On the offensive side of the ball, Carroll said the team is still struggling trying to find good shots.
The Lady Wolves (2-6) opened the tournament with a 57-21 loss to the top ranked team in the state, Sheridan. They closed out the tournament with a 38-21 loss to fourth-ranked Cheyenne Central. Their closest game of the tournament was a 48-43 loss to Cheyenne South.
Carroll said the team competed very hard against South. He said they had a letdown in the third quarter, but were able to come back in the fourth quarter. Carroll said they just couldn’t quite get the victory.
The Lady Wolves won’t have to wait long to avenge the loss to Cheyenne South (4-6). Green River will once again be on the road Friday evening with a matchup at Cheyenne South High School.
Carroll said they will look the film and see what they need to do better and see if they can get a better outcome.
The team will visit Laramie (4-5) Saturday afternoon. Carroll said much like Green River, the Lady Plainsmen are a smaller team in terms on heigth. He said they will do a lot of pressing.
“The biggest thing is since they are pressing, it’s important to make sure we take care of the basketball,” he said.
