Woman arrested for alleged auto theft, DUI

A Utah woman remains behind bars after being arrested for a number of charges, including the alleged theft of a vehicle in Green River.

Rose Mary McKell, 28, of Magna, Utah, was arrested Jan. 5 for felony theft, along with misdemeanor-level charges of driving while under the influence and driving while suspended. The felony charge is punishable with a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine while the misdemeanor charges are each punishable with a jail sentence of up to six months and a $750 fine.

According to court documents, Green River Police Department Officer Kent Hemphill was dispatched to 250 East Second South regarding a stolen vehicle. Upon arriving, the officer spoke with Larry Hemphill, who claimed McKell took his 2004 Dodge Neon without permission.

Lewis said the two had a brief argument and afterward saw McKell take a keyring off the pegboard near the front door and leave the residence. Lewis told the officer he saw McKell drive off in his car, something he did not give her permission to do. The vehicle was valued at approximately $1,800 and an attempt to locate request was sent through central dispatch.

A Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Scott Morris noticed a blue Dodge Neon matching the description provided by Lewis traveling eastbound on Interstate 80. He pulled the vehicle over at mile marker 66 and told the driver, who identified herself as McKell, about the attempt to locate request. Court documents claim McKell told the deputy that the car did belong to her boyfriend, Lewis, and took the vehicle while he was asleep.

While talking with McKell, the deputy noted a strong alcoholic odor on McKell’s breath and noticed her eyes to be red, watery and bloodshot. Documents state he also noticed McKell’s speech to be slurred as she spoke with him. When Deputy Morris asked about McKell drinking alcoholic beverages, she told him she had three beers, the last of which being roughly 30 minutes prior to being stopped.

The deputy asked McKell to perform a field sobriety test and noticed she had difficulty maintaining her balance throughout the test. KcKell was arrested after she was determined to be under the influence of alcohol. Documents state her blood-alcohol content was found to be at .07 after a breath test was administered at the Sweetwater County Detention Center.
